Chingay Presentation - Behind the Scene

So a few days ago we had a presentation about the Chingay parade that we had recently attended. The presentation is about the history of Chingay, the theme of this year's parade, the segments of performances and our personal thoughts and areas we think can be done better. The 20 minutes presentation is quite a troublesome task as we had to research for key points, source for pictures and make a outline of our presentation. So, let us share with you what we thought about the presentation...

WANG XUCHEN
The most challenging part to me, is to generate an idea that makes our presentation special, to make what we are going to say unique, interesting and eye-catching. It was hard to think out of the box and adapt a style different from the typical presentation style of explaining slides. After hours of hardwork, we managed to come out with a rather unnique idea. We decided to turn the whole presentation into a skit. In which we "act" as ourselves, and relevant people to present what we saw and what we thought. As for myself, I had to role play our CID teacher, Mr Willy Chua, and myself concurrently. I find it challenging to think from a teacher's point of view, to say things a teacher would say. The most difficult part of all was to fit a whole chunk of explanation into a dialouge. We can't overdo it by spamming a long string of chim speeches, that would defeat the purpose of doing a role play, but at the same time, too little details would leave our presentation pointless. In the end we came out with something, somewhere in between. And the product is a funny, informal skit, with informations and descriptions squeezed in between our conversations. Overall the presentation is quite a challenge, but enriching at the same time. It provides an opportunity for us to reflect on what we had seen during the parade, and think about what are the take-aways from the parade.

This whole process was really fun and interesting. Since i am in Infocomm club which had to come up with special types of presentation during competitions to present our research and such, i could predict what most of my classmates would come up with. Thus, i suggested doing an informal skit, in which both our classmates and teacher could relate to. However, with the geniuses in our group, we came up with a even better idea! :3

We spent more than 3 days and 3 nights crying over the script as we had a tough challenge : to make it as interesting and informative as possible, and yet make them short and sweet as honey. ;) We often have to crash at my house where we eat instant noodles as our dinner while working through the script halfway. It was tiring eating the same thing and such (and my money flying away because those are my instant noodles... ), but we had fun together. :D Usually, we would be like this:

And we were really like that till we knew our script was quite screwed up and for our own goods, we had to threaten ourselves like "If i play any music, i will pay each of you $10."

There were 2 nights in which we rushed the most. One was the time when we are at the library. All was going well till around 8:30pm till we can't take the slowness of the wifi at the library anymore and crashed at my house, but only one of them as the others had to go home because they have something on. That day, we planned out who is going to say what and started doing the props, and finished around one-third of the script.

The other night, we finished and perfected our script and added some more funny parts to make sure our classmates attention will be on us, which include some failed singing as well. We had much fun that night though my group mates went back home super late, at around 12:30am-1am.

On the day of our presentation, we were all nervous, bringing down script to memorise and familiarize with it, hiding the script underneath in our other classes when we finished the task given. Though we were nervous while presenting, (due to a lot of retardness, like me saying that "The chin is gay." and "fabrics swimming around in the sea." ) , we did pretty well. :) I managed to say "a huge straw horse." YAY. When i was rehearsing, i will always say "A huge STRAY horse" or "A huge straw HOUSE".

I learnt a lot from this Chingay presentation. Not only did i gain more information about Chingay and its origin and history, I also spent more time with friends, and got EVEN closer with them though i am already VERY close with them. ( Does this even make sense? o.O) I am not going to state all those such things like we learnt about teamwork blablabla, as the five of us are already very close from the start, since 2013. Therefore, we are like this one big family. We help each other out when in need, comfort each other when they are depressed or sad, scold each other like mothers nagging at their child, and having childish fights like married couples.

I've really enjoyed the whole process of the presentation, from the script writing to the real presentation itself. Honestly, we have spent a long time preparing our script and props and often had to stay late till 11pm or so even though there's school the next day. Sure, it is a tough job, but seriously, I felt that it was fun and okay since my friends and I were all in this together. I really enjoyed the actual presentation as I felt like all our hardwork had paid off and that the results were actually better than what I thought it would be,

Researching for the presentation was a necessity, since the Emcee for the Chingay parade spoke too soft and could not be heard. We had to research on the significance of the performances, the history of Chingay, the significance of the theme etc. We realised that we weren't very productive when we researched together as we often end up watching videos which were unrelated to CID, thus we couldn't really do much for the first few times we met up to do CID. After a few meet ups  I found out that it is more productive if we split the work : 3members research individually, 2members compile all our research. We have also self-realised that listening to music is slowing down our pace. Thus we had to control... This is also why we could finish our Preparation for CID presentation in time.

For our CID presentation, we were all keen to do something different from the rest. After much discussion, we have all decided on doing a skit. This is not an easy task as we have to take up roles and we also have to bring across the important points through our conversation. This is challenging as we have to summarise and take out all the important points so our conversation would not be so lengthy. We also had to find a link between our conversations. For the skit, Xuchen and i had double role. Apart from our own identities, Xuchen took up an extra role ,as our CID teacher, Mr Chua while i took an extra role of an emcee. This is not an easy task as we had to change into our role at great speed. For my case, i am the Emcee as well as myself. Thus i had to put on my specs and hold the microphone when i am an emcee and take them off when i am roleplaying as myself. We have to be really clear as of which role we are when we are going to speak. I believe that it is also not easy for Xuchen. After much preparation, the product of our presentation was OnE 0f a k1nD. While our other classmates did a serious presentation, ours was informal and fun yet our points were still clear. At the end of our presentation, i was really proud of each of us, as i felt that we definitely did a great job!

For this presentation, i have really seen the efforts put in by everyone of us. As we have all different and busy schedule, we had to make time for meeting up for discussion. Many of us definitely made a big sacrifice for the presentation as we mostly discussed until late at night, even until midnight on a school day. Thus we had to rush through our homework when we get home. Although YiHui had to go for competitions most of the time, she still found time once in a while to discussed with us. We know she cant control when her competition date is going to be, so we had to update her on what we have done, then she will also do her research at home and help us a little. Although we hoped that she would win in the competition, we were also very worried for her presentation. We are all glad that she did well on the actual presentation.☺

The "hair" Xuchen is wearing(on top) is made by Iris and Xuchen. I am very sure that it would not have been an easy task. Doesn't the hair looks real and look like Mr Chua's? I have heard from Iris that they had to cut put the shape of his hair nicely and used 3 shades of brown to colour his hair. They did a great job didn't they? During the presentation, i could see that everyone made effort to speak louder and fluently with intonation. Even Yi Hui and LingBo who were usually soft-spoken , made a huge effort to speak louder. Although there might be some errors made in our conversations, but i believe that we have all done a great job.

Through this, I could also see the teamwork of our group. We are all different people, it is normal to have different opinions. So we had to discuss and convince everyone that it would be the best choice. We also looked at the pros and cons of everything, to make everything fair and obvious for everyone to see. For example, when we were discussing about what we could do, we thought of having flashback, skit, serious presentation etc. Then we looked into what we could do if we choose that particular style. We also put ourselves in the audiences point of view, to see what they would think of our final product. 5 people, 1 goal. We all worked together towards a  commogoal. To me, these people are more than just group members, they are friends, true friends, FAMILY. The times spent together are truely AWESOME.

The CID presentation had allowed us more time to bond and have fun, although we are already close friends.
We really had fun during the preparation of this presentation, the sacrifice of time we all made was definitely worth it!☺
Summary of our Chingay presentation~

KONG YI HUI
To be honest about this presentation, I knew myself that I did badly. From preparing to the exact presentation, I feel so sorry for my teammates. For the past few weeks, I had competitions on many of the days and the afternoons were tightly scheduled. Thus, most of the script were written by my teammates and I only did a small part of it. As my trainings were mostly on the non-cca days, the script were mostly left to do by my poor teammates. While I was busy training, they were there working with the script. Just to say, thanks and I really owe them a lot.
Through the presentation, (though I did not do much of the script, I did research about Chingay too)) I knew more about the history of Chingay and what it is for. It was also a great time to argue with the teammates about the presentation^^--> makes us closer:))
